Mr. Mood Swing

Every day, it becomes a little more painfully obvious: we are getting further from sweet, chubby, angelic age one and, step by terrifying step, approaching the dreaded two.

I’ll let little Mr. Mood Swing share a few recent examples from this emotional journey:

DSC_0388-1 4 seconds later . . .

Being offered a piece of donut, homemade (and so delicious!) by his Grandpa Brown:

DSC_0545Oh wait . . . hang on . . .

DSC_0551 That’s what I thought.

I have no freakin’ clue what this one was about:

DSC_0528 But I’m not terribly sympathetic to whatever plight he was suffering through, since it was miraculously fixed 2.4 seconds later.

What, you think it’s funny to interrupt me while I read?

DSC_0548-1 (This is the face I get 99% of the time now when I try to take pictures. Charming.)

Must . . . not . . . smile . . .

Thank goodness his completely unpredictable mood pendulum swings both ways. I hate to say it, but let’s be honest: this kid is not a pretty crier.

I’ll give him this—it’s never boring around here. And if, for some reason, it ever is, just wait about 5 seconds until his next mood swing hits . . . it’ll sure get interesting quickly.

  1. We are going through the same thing! So it must be a phase.

  2. He and J must be within months of each other, because we're going thru the exact same thing. Now I know where that phrase "turn that frown upside down" comes from - because it literally flips in seconds. But the cries all come with blotchy-ness and tears, so they're not completely fake! We are now going through another round of separation anxiety, this time with a louder screaming voice. :-)

  3. Who ever said boys don't have a cycle hasn't lived with one! My brothers totally had "periods" growing up! lol! Good luck! It does get better... but it might take until he's 4!

  4. Glad to know it's not just my own 2-year-old. Boy-o-boy! And women have the bad rap for mood swings??!!

  5. these photos are so funny! looks like you have your hands full :)

  7. He's so cute though! He and Sawyer should get together and cry/laugh/frown/scream/cry/smile (all within 60 seconds) together, because my child is ca-razy town lately as well. This too shall pass...

  8. Ugh! Kids and their darn mood swings! It's sooo frustrating! Three year olds seem to be much worse, in this place anyway, I've named it the tortuous threes :/

  9. I had too much fun reading this as my two year old was having an absolute melt down over the fact that the pages of his board book weren't lining up correctly. And that was immediately following giggles over said book. And giggles returned when I suggested we go upstairs. Ah... such emotions!

  10. Aren't 2 year olds awesome? Try working with 4-5 of them per day. :) Forrest cracks me up in those photos. And you're right, he's definitely an ugly crier. But I can't judge because so am I.

  11. This too shall pass. Just enjoy them while they are little and moody. A teen who is moody is 100 times worse than a little one. Sorry to have to say this. When they are teens, they are very verbal and no tears! Hang in there all of you. They will be grown before you can much more than turn around.

  12. Haha, he is just so adorable! I remember the toddler years from when I was a nanny, you just never know what to expect. Hopefully his emotions will calm down a bit soon, for your sake. =)

  13. Haha, ohhhh man. You are one of those rare and wonderfully honest mamas! I love it!!

  14. Soon he will be 3-4-5....You will leave the house for an outing and have mini panic attacks every time you encounter family and strangers alike....Because, he will have absolutely NO filter on that sweet little mouth! At least now he can't tell you why he's sooooo mad at you! ;) Every stage is a blessing and a reminder that those little angels are put on this earth to make us grateful for both the quiet moments and the crazy. <3 you are doing an awesome job as a mama! I love reading your blog, you seem like a nice, "GOOD" person, but isn't all fake fuzzy wuzzy.. and come on, who is like that??!! ;)

  15. Just when I thought I couldn't deal with my teenager another minute, you post this! (Adorable, by the way! Aren't they wonderful?)

  16. It looks like he's crying from his mouth like Liz Lemon

  17. My son just hit the "not-so-pretty cry" stage, too. I definitely bounce back and forth between laughing and pulling my hair out! hehe

  18. This has been my fav blog to date!

  19. Like my's a good things he's ridiculously cute. There is seriously a reason dogs and babies are cute.

I'm glad you keep this kid business real.

  20. We met with a realtor last weekend to go over the option of selling and buying a "fixer -uper" which has always been our dream and we thought now would be the perfect time before the kids get too old and settled into a school...but...after seeing our're going to stay put for a little while....I had no idea there were so many scary houses around here!

    Good luck on the search!

  21. This made me laugh. My little guy (also blond with blue eyes!) just turned 1, but I feel like I am right there with you! He is/was the happiest little guy ever, but now.. cranky pants. Good luck to you! :)
